Port MacDonnell suspected murder-suicide investigation

Overview

Following the discovery of Helena Wright and her two-year-old daughter, Hazel, in the water off Port MacDonnell, South Australia, authorities launched a search for Wright’s three-month-old son, Lewis Wright. Initial search efforts were hampered by rough seas and strong winds, which led officials to shift operations from water to land. Superintendent Trent Cox noted that conditions were “extremely challenging” and expressed that it was “very unlikely the infant has survived.”

South Australia Police have since formally concluded the search for the infant. Despite specialist diving operations along the Cape Northumberland coastline, treacherous swells, poor visibility, and dangerous underwater terrain prevented the infant from being located. While the formal search has ended, officers will continue to monitor the shoreline.

The deaths are being treated as a suspected murder-suicide, and a coronial investigation is ongoing. Police have requested that the public avoid spreading “rubbish” and speculation on social media to prevent further distress to the family and the local community.
