Portugal drug trafficking and security response
Overview
Portugal’s Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neves, has identified drug trafficking by transnational criminal organizations as the primary threat to national internal security. Neves noted that the country is being utilized as a strategic entry point for cocaine into Europe, driven by high profit margins. To address the social impact and rising crime associated with drug trafficking, the Public Security Police (PSP) and the National Republican Guard (GNR) are increasing police visibility and operations in Lisbon and Porto.
In response to these security challenges, the government is preparing legislative changes to criminalize the sale of fake drugs. This measure aims to close a legal loophole that allowed sellers to avoid penalties by selling substances that were not technically classified as narcotics.
