Portugal Green Railway Pass expansion
Overview
Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced the expansion of the ‘Green Railway Pass’ (Passe Ferroviário Verde) to include urban train lines within the Lisbon and Porto metropolitan areas, effective September. The monthly pass will maintain its current cost of 20 euros.
The expansion applies to urban lines covered by the Navegante and Andante intermodal passes, allowing train-exclusive commuters to use the specific railway pass instead of broader intermodal options. While the pass will be available in these metropolitan areas, it remains valid across the national rail network, excluding Alfa Pendular and 1st class Intercidades services. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing noted that existing Navegante and Andante titles will remain available without changes to their current conditions.
Scheduled to begin in the third week of September to coincide with European Mobility Week, the expansion will also cover Fertagus lines. Government statements suggest the measure could save passengers up to 480 euros per year. For instance, commuters on the Famalicão to Porto route, which typically costs approximately 60 euros per month, could see significant reductions. Other savings of up to 240 euros per year are expected for those switching from intermodal passes to the train-only PFV. The pass is available to both Portuguese citizens and foreign residents in Portugal and can be purchased for 30, 60, or 90 days at costs of 20, 40, or 60 euros, respectively.
