Portugal's Conta Lá TV restructuring and management update
Overview
Following the July 2026 announcement of a financial crisis at the public-service channel Conta Lá, the media regulator ERC opened a sanction proceeding against the broadcaster. The regulator found that the channel failed to clearly identify sponsorships from 33 Portuguese municipalities during its ‘Melhor Natal de Portugal’ programme, a lapse that could compromise editorial independence.
On 6 August 2026, shareholders held an extraordinary general meeting to address the channel’s viability. During this meeting, shareholders approved the total conversion of invested capital into social capital and elected a new Management Commission—composed of Rui Rego, Diogo Alexandre, and Paulo Rego—to oversee a restructuring process through December.
The restructuring plan includes a planned capital increase of up to five million euros to manage an estimated four million euros in debt owed to the Tax Authority, Social Security, and signal distributor Ibertelco. The new commission has identified four immediate priorities: cost reduction, settling critical debts to the state and suppliers, developing debt management plans, and paying overdue salaries, which remain three months in arrears.
