Portuguese cultural center redevelopment projects
Overview
Various urban redevelopment projects in Portugal are targeting 2027 for the opening of new cultural facilities.
In Porto, the Matadouro — Centro Cultural do Porto, now renamed M-ODU, is undergoing a €40 million conversion in Campanhã. While the project is scheduled for delivery by the end of 2026, the Porto City Council announced a “progressive opening” throughout 2027 to allow for the “fit out” and preparation of the 20,000 square meter space. The complex, designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates and OODA, will include galleries, offices, and wellness areas.
Similarly, in Oliveira de Azeméis, the Oficina das Artes project is also expected to open in 2027. This initiative involves reconverting the former Garagem Justino into a hub for artistic creation, training, and exhibition. Although construction began in March 2025, the official opening has been delayed from its initial estimated timeline.
