Prayagraj urban flooding and monsoon disruption

Heavy monsoon rainfall has caused severe flooding and waterlogging in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Initial reports indicated that torrential rains led to water levels up to four feet in neighborhoods such as Rajrapur and Kareli, forcing school closures and disrupting traffic. In response to the widespread disruption, the Allahabad High Court took suo motu cognizance of the situation, requiring the District Magistrate and Municipal Commissioner to explain the lack of preventive measures.

As the rainfall continued, the flooding intensified. In areas like Kareli, water levels reportedly reached approximately six feet, submerging homes, vehicles, and household goods. The prolonged inundation has raised significant concerns regarding the city’s drainage infrastructure and the effectiveness of local smart city initiatives.

Recent reports indicate that continuous torrential rain has maintained water levels at approximately 5 feet in various sectors. District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma attributed the severity of the flooding to choke points within underground drainage systems that are 20 to 25 years old. To mitigate the crisis, authorities have been forced to break sections of roads to clear blockages and deploy pumps to drain water from low-lying areas, including George Town, Tagore Town, and Allapur.
