Prime Video release and renewal of Carrie television series

Overview

Prime Video released the first episode of ‘Carrie, the Stranger’, a new series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel directed and executive produced by Mike Flanagan. The series follows Carrie White, an isolated teenager experiencing the onset of telekinetic powers following a high school bullying scandal. The cast features Summer H. Howell as Carrie, Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, and Matthew Lillard as Director Gayle. Following its release on October 7, 2026, the series reached number one in more than 105 countries and recorded 3.6 million views in its first full week in the United States. Nielsen data reported the series drew 1.26 billion minutes viewed during the week of October 5–11.

Following this successful global debut, Prime Video has officially renewed the horror series for a second season. While the first season focuses on the iconic coming-of-age story and the prom scene, showrunner Mike Flanagan has indicated an ambition for a multi-season arc, potentially developing the series into a trilogy. This expansion is expected to move the narrative far beyond the traditional prom setting to explore the consequences of the first season's events, new character developments, and Carrie White’s connection to other individuals with supernatural abilities. The series has been noted for its contemporary setting, addressing modern issues such as social media and cyberbullying. The show has received positive critical reception, including an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
