Prison escapes in Ecuador

Overview

In late September 2026, two inmates escaped from the Turi prison in Cuenca, Ecuador. The fugitives, convicted of drug trafficking and robbery, used a rope made from bedsheets to descend from a cell window and exited through a guard post. A third cellmate was reportedly tied up to prevent an alarm.

On October 12, 2026, a second escape occurred at the Bellavista rehabilitation center in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas. Six high-security inmates facing charges including murder, rape, robbery, and drug trafficking escaped by digging a hole through a cell wall. The fugitives navigated through a plumbing duct and exited the building via a second hole, traveling approximately 80 meters to a nearby river.

Authorities noted that high water levels in the river hindered the ability to track footprints or determine the escapees' direction of travel. Investigations are examining how the escape was planned, as the lack of recent construction debris suggests the wall may have been breached over several days. Security concerns have been raised because surveillance cameras in the maximum security area were non-functional during the incident. The Ecuadorian National Police and Armed Forces have initiated search operations using patrols and drone surveillance.
