Protests at Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua

The Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua (UACH) is experiencing widespread unrest involving both labor unions and the student body.

Initially, the Sindicato de Trabajadores al Servicio de la UACH (STSUACH) organized marches and street closures across Chihuahua City, Ciudad Juárez, Delicias, and Hidalgo del Parral. The union demanded the respect of labor rights, union autonomy, and the payment of withheld salaries and retroactive wages. UACH Rector Luis Alfonso Rivera Campos responded by citing an exhausted fund for retirees and pensioners, noting the university provided a 1 million peso loan to the union. The administration stated that expanding positions is dependent on federal resources, while the union maintains the university has sufficient budget.

As the situation progressed, student protests emerged alongside labor actions. In Ciudad Juárez, students demanded the dismissal of the rector, citing the deterioration of campus infrastructure, including issues with water supply, leaks, and crumbling ceilings. Students questioned the management of tuition fees, while union members continued to protest at the Rectorate regarding unpaid wages for specific job categories that have remained unresolved for four years, improper payroll deductions, and excessive work shifts for security staff.
