Overview

The development of an oncology center at the Bodossakeio General Hospital in Ptolemaida has progressed from local criticism of delays to the formalization of a major infrastructure project.

Initially, Tasos Fountoglou, the deputy regional governor for health in Western Macedonia, criticized the long-standing lack of local services that forced patients to travel long distances. Subsequently, the Greek Ministries of Health and National Economy and Finance issued an official invitation for the hospital to host a new Holistic Cancer Management Center. This 27 million euro project, funded via the Special Just Transition Program, includes the construction of a 1,500 square meter radiotherapy center equipped with a PET-SCAN machine and an expansion of the radiology department to accommodate a 3 Tesla MRI scanner. The initiative is intended to provide comprehensive oncological services to Western Macedonia and alleviate the burden on other hospitals in Northern Greece.
