Public administration and security in Amazonas

In August 2026, Manaus and the state of Amazonas initiated several administrative and security developments. Initially, municipal agencies in Manaus announced recruitment processes for tax auditors and social security positions through the Fundação Carlos Chagas.

Following this, Amazonas Governor Roberto Cidade launched the ‘Bairro Seguro e Ocupação’ (Safe Neighborhood and Occupation) initiative, an integrated security operation aimed at combating organized crime in Manaus. This security push included the deployment of over 500 military police student-soldiers for operational training. Regarding state personnel, the government indicated plans to call approximately 1,000 candidates from previous public security exams, though timing is subject to budgetary reviews. Additionally, the governor is contesting a legal suspension of a R$ 1.4 billion state loan.

By late August, Governor Cidade expanded his security agenda by proposing the construction of two modern prison complexes in strategic interior regions to decentralize the penal system. He also announced potential plans for new Amazonas Military Police public service exams, possibly scheduled for 2027.

On the economic front, the Federal Public Ministry and the Attorney General's Office have requested the lifting of the suspension on the R$ 1.4 billion loan, though Cidade maintains the state has the capacity to secure the financing. Meanwhile, the Manaus Free Trade Zone reported revenues of US$ 19.3 billion between January and May 2026 due to industrial diversification.

In early September, the Manaus Municipal Finance Secretariat (Semef) progressed with municipal recruitment by opening applications for a tax auditor competition organized by the Fundação Carlos Chagas. The process offers 20 immediate vacancies and a reserve list, with an initial salary of R$ 27,270.61. Selected auditors will be responsible for tax credit assessment, company auditing, and fiscal intelligence investigations to combat tax evasion.
