Public dissatisfaction with Dutch Jetten cabinet

Public confidence in the Dutch minority cabinet, led by Prime Minister Rob Jetten, has experienced a sharp decline. An Ipsos I&O poll in early September indicated that approximately 70 percent of voters were dissatisfied with the government, with only 18 percent expressing satisfaction. This discontent was largely attributed to budget negotiations and the coalition's lack of a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

By mid-September, subsequent polling showed trust in the D66, VVD, and CDA coalition had fallen to 16 percent, down from 33 percent at the start of the administration. Support within the D66 voter base also dropped significantly from 76 percent to 49 percent.

During this period of declining trust, Finance Minister Eelco Heinen presented the Miljoenennota, which signaled a shift toward increased income redistribution. The budget includes 1.5 billion euros for purchasing power repairs, while higher-income earners are expected to contribute approximately 750 million euros more. This trend toward a more progressive tax system has drawn commentary from various political figures, including CDA leader Henri Bontenbal.

By late September, skepticism regarding the government’s longevity intensified. Polling indicated that only 8 percent of voters believe the administration will complete its full term until 2030, while 49 percent expect the cabinet to resign within the current year. Additionally, the cabinet has faced criticism for refusing to engage in parliamentary debates regarding foreign policy. Specifically, the government declined to respond to written questions from the Forum for Democratie (FVD) concerning academic analyses of the conflict in Ukraine, labeling such inquiries as ‘pro-Russian disinformation from the Kremlin’ and stating they would not engage with such frames.
