Public health and community initiatives in Italy

Various health and community-driven initiatives continue to be implemented across different regions of Italy to support patient care and disease awareness.

Early efforts focused on preventive measures and specialized screenings, such as the ‘Fism for People’ project in Cagliari providing free specialist counseling, and the ‘Rare means Care’ campaign in Milan targeting awareness of rare kidney diseases. Other regional activities included promoting healthy eating in Treviso, conducting eye exams in Rimini and Lodi, and addressing high rates of civil blindness in Sicily. Subsequent developments expanded into clinical support and therapeutic programs, such as community fundraising for a hematology department in Piacenza and the ‘Fidati della mia Zampa’ pet therapy project at Santa Corona Hospital.

Recent activities have reinforced these preventive and community-based models. In Cagliari, the ‘Fism for People’ project expanded its impact by providing over 300 free specialist screenings and counseling sessions. In Milan, the ‘Rare means Care’ campaign utilized an orange monolith installation in the CityLife district to raise awareness for rare kidney diseases.

Regional government and volunteer efforts have also intensified. The Lazio Regional Council is relaunching its ‘Un Consiglio in Salute’ program in Rome, offering services such as influenza vaccinations and blood donation. In Rome, a free prevention program scheduled for late October will offer screenings for cardiology, diabetes, and dermatology. Additionally, the De Sanctis Prize for Social Health will be awarded at the Consiglio di Stato to recognize institutions like Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. In Tuscany, a Simg initiative is focusing on palliative care training for general practitioners, while in Bra, ASL CN2 is organizing World Heart Day activities to promote cardiovascular health.
