Rising infectious disease rates in Skopje and North Macedonì
Overview
Medical professionals in Skopje have reported a series of increases in various infectious diseases. Initially, doctors noted a rapid spread of infectious mononucleosis among adolescents, characterized by symptoms such as high fever, sore throat, and extreme fatigue. Healthcare providers noted that the virus may be facilitated by social behaviors, and in some instances, the infection has led to serious complications like liver issues. Doctors also observed cases of streptococcal angina and seasonal flu symptoms among those returning from summer holidays.
By September, North Macedonia recorded 1,042 cases of acute infectious diseases, representing a 22% increase compared to the same month the previous year. The Institute of Public Health identified enterocolitis as the most prevalent condition with 694 cases, followed by 123 cases of pertussis. West Nile fever has emerged as a significant concern, with 16 confirmed cases and four deaths reported during September. Additionally, eight new cases of HIV/AIDS were registered, resulting in two deaths.
At the “Kozle” University Clinic for Children's Diseases, outpatient visits for respiratory tract infections have risen, a trend attributed to the autumn season and children returning to school. While two cases of influenza type A have been confirmed, seasonal flu vaccinations continue, prioritizing those over 65 and individuals with chronic illnesses. The country is also awaiting a shipment of Japanese tuberculosis vaccines following the suspension of Bulgarian vaccines due to quality concerns.
