Public health initiatives in Greece

Overview

Throughout September 2026, various Greek municipalities and organizations are implementing public health and preventative medicine initiatives.

In the Municipality of Zacharos, social care programs are conducting community visits to provide free health screenings, such as blood pressure and oxygen level measurements, for elderly residents in remote areas. In Ai Stratis, a mobile medical unit funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and operated by the ‘Renaissance & Progress’ NGO is scheduled to provide access to 12 medical specialties, including cardiology and gynecology. Additionally, the Municipality of Athens is relaunching its Smoking Cessation Clinic to offer personalized counseling and pharmaceutical monitoring.

In Messenia, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) is collaborating with the local municipality to conduct five free preventive health screening sessions in communities including Kalochori, Adrianis, Achladochori, Kalamaki, and Paniperi. These sessions aim to facilitate early diagnosis of chronic diseases through various diagnostic tests, such as cholesterol and blood glucose measurements, as well as vaccinations and general health counseling. For residents with severe mobility issues, home visits can be arranged via a dedicated helpline.
