Public health screening initiatives in Bulgaria
Overview
Bulgarian medical institutions have launched several free health screening initiatives as part of national prevention programs. In early September, the SofiaMed medical complex in Sofia began conducting preventive checkups for children and students aged 0 to 18, covering specialties such as neurology, ophthalmology, and pediatrics.
Simultaneously, efforts to combat tuberculosis are underway. The Dr. Ivan Seliminski Regional Hospital in Sliven scheduled free examinations for mid-September as part of the National Tuberculosis Prevention Program 2026–2030. Following this, the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Pneumo-Phthisiatric Diseases in Ruse announced a screening campaign running from September 14 to September 25. This Ruse initiative includes medical examinations, consultations, and potential diagnostic tests like chest X-rays. Regional health officials reported that tuberculosis incidence in the Ruse region remains below the national average, noting a broader national decline in registered cases from 1,872 in 2014 to 913 in 2024.
