Public health vaccination initiatives in Brazil

Overview

Municipalities across Brazil are implementing various vaccination initiatives to improve public health and immunization coverage. In Senador Canedo and Limeira, local governments are conducting weekend drives to update vaccination records for all age groups. In Senador Canedo, the ‘Imuniza Canedo’ initiative includes sessions at UBS São Sebastião, with future dates scheduled for November 14 and December 12. In Limeira, services are available at UBS Campo Belo and via a drive-thru at Parque Cidade, offering vaccines for influenza, dengue, yellow fever, and COVID-19. Concurrently, health authorities in Rio de Janeiro, Belford Roxo, Duque de Caxias, and Nova Iguaçu have launched a specific rescue campaign against meningitis. Supported by the Ministry of Health, this initiative aims to administer approximately 400,000 doses of the ACWY vaccine to individuals aged 1 to 24 and healthcare workers. This response follows reported increases in meningococcal disease cases in the state of Rio de Janeiro, with 70 cases recorded in 2024, 95 in 2025, and 49 reported through September 2026. The campaign is scheduled to run until October 31. Recent efforts in Rio de Janeiro state include the Municipal Health Secretariat organizing a vaccination station at the Acari/Fazenda Botafogo Metro station to provide free influenza and meningococcal ACWY vaccines to high-traffic areas. In Belford Roxo, officials held a mobilization event at Heliópolis Square to intensify meningococcal ACWY immunization for those aged 15 to 24, while also offering COVID-19, dengue, HPV, and yellow fever vaccines. Further expansion of immunization efforts includes a drive in Aparecida de Goiânia, where the Municipal Health Secretariat is administering meningitis and HPV vaccines in military schools through October 23. In Paraíba, a ‘Dia D’ multivacination mobilization across 186 municipalities resulted in the administration of 33,710 doses. In João Pessoa, officials reported that 44,289 dengue vaccine doses have been administered since 2024.
