Public security and crime in Tocantins

Overview

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Tocantins (MPTO) initiated a formal investigation into the operational conditions of the Homicide and Person Protection Police Station (DHPP) in Palmas. This inquiry, led by the Specialized Public Security Action Group (Gaesp), aims to address shortages of investigators, clerks, and delegates following a surge in violent deaths. Data showed that Palmas recorded 47 homicides between January and October 15, 2026, nearly matching the 49 violent deaths recorded in all of 2025.

In separate law enforcement actions, the Brazilian Federal Police and the Military Police of Tocantins arrested three high-risk fugitives in the municipalities of Natividade, Paraíso do Tocantins, and Gurupi. The arrests involved individuals wanted for theft, drug trafficking, and the rape of a vulnerable person.
