Public security expansion in Goiás

Efforts to strengthen public security in Goiás have moved from legislative proposals for regional cooperation to direct municipal expansion in Goiânia.

Initially, Romário Policarpo, president of the Goiânia Chamber, proposed a bill to allow municipalities in Goiás to form consortia. This initiative seeks to enable smaller towns with limited financial resources to pool funds and resources with neighboring cities to expand the presence of Municipal Guards, particularly in the Goiânia Metropolitan Region and the Entorno do Distrito Federal.

Following these legislative discussions, the City of Goiânia announced a significant expansion of its own security forces. The municipality plans to hold a civil service examination for 700 Municipal Guard positions, consisting of 200 immediate vacancies and 500 for a reserve list. To support this growth, the city is investing in a substantial arsenal of vehicles and weaponry, including SUVs, motorcycles, pistols, and carbines. Additionally, the administration is addressing copper wire theft by proposing legislation to track the origin of copper sales and by replacing copper with aluminum in public lighting.
