As of September 2026, the government has reached a milestone by completing 1,000 free cataract and pterygium surgeries over a three-month period. This total consists of 500 procedures from an initial session in June and 500 from a second recent session. The ‘5 de Mayo’ Itinerant Surgical Hospital, which required a 41 million peso investment, is described as a first-of-its-kind facility in Latin America due to its advanced technology and operational capacity.

To expand coverage, the state plans to acquire a second specialized mobile unit next year to reach the Sierra Norte, Nororiental, Negra, and Mixteca regions. The government maintains a long-term goal of reaching 2,500 procedures by 2027. Additionally, under the ‘Descubriendo el mundo con otros ojos’ program, Secretary of Welfare Laura Artemisa García Chávez announced a collaboration with Fundación CLISA to provide free vision exams and prescription glasses to children and adolescents to address issues like myopia and astigmatism.
