Puma sightings and monitoring in Mexico

Overview

Wildlife monitoring efforts in Mexico have documented puma activity in different regions. Initially, a camera trap operated by the Program for the Protection and Restoration of Ecosystems and Priority Species (Prorest) captured footage of a puma in the Médanos de Samalayuca Flora and Fauna Protection Area in Chihuahua.

Following this, authorities in Cancún began investigating a reported puma sighting in the Cuna Maya neighborhood. While the presence of the animal has not been officially confirmed in that area, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has conducted patrols. Local officials have advised residents to keep pets indoors and suggested that people traveling at night walk in groups or use noise-making objects to alert any wildlife of their presence.
