Pyrotechnics accidents in State of Mexico
Overview
In late September 2026, two separate pyrotechnics accidents occurred during religious festivals in the State of Mexico.
On September 26, an explosion in Cuautitlán Izcalli during a procession for San Francisco de Asís resulted in the death of a 15-year-old boy and injured ten others, including eight minors. Local authorities noted the procession lacked official permits.
Two days later, on September 27, a malfunction involving a “torito” firework device in the community of San Jerónimo Cuatro Vientos, Ixtapaluca, injured at least 18 people. Witnesses described a “glowing red object spinning and spraying sparks” before it moved toward the crowd, causing panic among hundreds of attendees.
Of those injured in Ixtapaluca, 12 were transported to specialized hospitals, including seven individuals with third-degree burns and five minors with first or second-degree burns. Six others were treated on-site for minor injuries and nervous crises. Local Civil Protection, firefighters, and security forces responded to the scene. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and to review the safety conditions under which the pyrotechnics were handled.
