Qatar sovereign wealth and economic diversification
Overview
Qatar has initiated a strategic restructuring of its sovereign wealth management to drive economic diversification. The government launched Doha Investment, a new division of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) designed to manage a domestic portfolio of approximately 45 state-owned enterprises, including Qatar Airways Group and QNB Group. This move aims to bolster local companies and deepen capital markets.
Alongside this domestic focus, the QIA established a $20 billion strategic partnership with JPMorgan Asset Management, involving mandates for global equity portfolios and U.S. private credit.
Building on these structural changes, Qatar has announced plans for over $60 billion in infrastructure and private investments over the next five years. This includes $38.5 billion for infrastructure projects, some via public-private partnerships, and $22.5 billion directed toward the real estate and hospitality sectors. The Doha Investment unit will continue to manage the state-owned portfolio to attract international expertise and investment to support these growth initiatives.
