Quintero family corruption probes in Colombia

Overview

In early July 2026 Colombian prosecutors moved to indict Miguel Quintero Calle, brother of former Medellín mayor Daniel Quintero, over six fire‑brigade contracts (2020‑2022) worth roughly COP 17.6 billion. The indictment alleged direct awards, diversion of public funds and receipt of commissions.

A Medellín judge of the 22nd Penal Circuit later nullified the criminal case against Daniel Quintero and 12 former officials linked to the Aguas Vivas land‑parcel controversy, finding the charge sheet insufficiently precise and violating due‑process rights. Both the prosecutor’s office and the mayor’s office announced they would appeal and the Fiscalía was ordered to redo the accusation.

Daniel Quintero denounced the proceedings as politically motivated persecution aimed at blocking his presidential ambitions and said he would take the matter to the Inter‑American Court of Human Rights while creating a foundation to defend those he claims are targeted for political reasons.

Investigators also highlighted four companies registered by Quintero—Quintero Calle Lawyers, NeuraTork Robotics, MEV Energy and Reeco Mining—created on the same day at a single residential address. Observers suggested the firms could be used to gain extra voting power in commerce‑chamber elections; Quintero maintains they are part of a technological project, were declared in his asset statement, and will be reactivated after his public service tenure.

Prosecutors plan to refile the case on a corrected legal basis, keeping the legal battle over the Quintero family’s public‑contracting activities ongoing.
