Alejandro Davidovich Fokina wins Shanghai Masters

Overview

The 2026 Shanghai Masters concluded with an all-Spanish final between Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Rafael Jodar. Although Jodar, 20, dominated the early stages of the match, Davidovich Fokina secured the title with a comeback victory, winning 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.

This victory marks the first time a Spanish player has won the singles title at this ATP Masters 1000 tournament since its inception in 2009. For Davidovich Fokina, the win represents his first Masters 1000 title and elevates his world ranking to number 13. The 27-year-old Spaniard overcame several high-profile opponents during the tournament, including a semifinal victory over Alexander Zverev. This championship also marks his third career ATP title, following previous wins in Mallorca and Chengdu. Following the match, Davidovich Fokina expressed a sense of relief and credited his team for supporting him through a difficult period. He also addressed comments regarding his appearance and heritage, reaffirming his identity and commitment to representing Spain.

Jodar’s run to the final included a semifinal victory over Daniil Medvedev (6-3, 6-4), making him the youngest finalist in the tournament's history. His semifinal match was noted for a heated dispute between Medvedev and the umpire regarding electronic line-calling protocols. While Jodar fell short of becoming the first Spaniard to claim the Shanghai trophy, his performance followed a significant season that included a title in Marrakech. During the final, Jodar was unable to maintain momentum against Davidovich Fokina’s experience and physical resilience; the 20-year-old required medical assistance for muscle overload in the deciding set. The result also saw Jodar move to eleventh in the rankings.
