Raiffeisen Bank International Russian legal disputes

Overview

Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) is navigating significant legal and regulatory challenges involving its Russian operations.

Initially, the bank faced scrutiny following a report by Grizzly Research alleging that RBI’s Russian subsidiary facilitated trade transactions worth $1.191 billion involving restricted goods, including components for military and nuclear production. RBI rejected these claims, describing them as containing “numerous misleading statements and factual errors,” and noted that its shares dropped significantly following the report.

Separately, RBI secured a legal victory in a Vienna court regarding a dispute over funds seized in Russia. The Vienna Regional Court for Civil Matters awarded RBI and its Russian subsidiary, AO Raiffeisen, approximately 3.15 billion euros in damages, covering seized funds, lost interest, and legal costs. This ruling follows a 2025 Russian court decision that had ordered the subsidiary to pay 2.4 billion euros to Rasperia Trading.

RBI intends to recover the awarded amount by targeting assets held by Rasperia in Austria, such as 28.5 million shares in the construction firm Strabag, accumulated dividends since the 2021 fiscal year, and a cash distribution from March 2024. While these assets are currently frozen under EU sanctions, RBI plans to petition the Financial Market Authority (FMA) to release them for enforcement if the ruling becomes final. Rasperia Trading has four weeks to appeal the default judgment.
