Railway crossing safety in Jablonec nad Nisou
Overview
Following two collisions between trains and passenger cars at a railway crossing on Revoluční Street in Jablonec nad Nisou, local authorities have moved to improve safety at the site. The accidents, which occurred in April and August, resulted in five injuries, including three serious cases.
The crossing on the Jizerskohorské železnice line currently lacks physical barriers and relies on light signals that drivers frequently ignore. While the municipality has utilized surveillance cameras to monitor safety violations, the long-term goal remains the installation of physical barriers, which Správa železnic is considering as part of its national modernization investment plans.
As an immediate response, the city is implementing new safety measures effective October 17. These include a 30 km/h speed limit, new vertical and horizontal traffic signage, and an optical speed brake. Mayor Miloš Vele stated these measures are intended to force drivers to slow down and pay closer attention to signals.
