Recovery of stolen religious artifacts in Italy
Overview
Authorities in Italy have successfully recovered religious artifacts following separate thefts in the regions of Marche and Emilia-Romagna.
In late August, Carabinieri investigators recovered a liturgical altar stolen from a church in Civitanova Marche in June. The artifact was located in the province of Fermo following a search of a local shipping company, leading to charges against a 42-year-old man for receiving stolen goods.
In late September, Carabinieri recovered an iron tabernacle decorated with gold-inlaid mosaics that had been stolen from the Santuario della Madonna del Bosco in Alfonsine. While the tabernacle was found in a nearby irrigation canal and returned to the parish, the ciborium and communion holder previously kept inside it remain missing. Investigations continue to identify the perpetrators.
