Overview

On September 15, 2026, fishermen near Ensenada, Baja California, discovered a cylindrical object resembling a torpedo or missile floating approximately 42.7 kilometers southwest of the coast. The Mexican Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) deployed an interceptor vessel to secure the item, which was identified as an air-launched practice torpedo used for anti-submarine warfare training. Authorities confirmed the device contained no explosive charge and posed no risk to the public.

Subsequent investigations revealed the object was an MK 54 REXTORP (Recoverable Exercise Torpedo) lost by the U.S. Navy during a training exercise near San Clemente Island, California, on September 2. Oceanographic analysis indicated that winds and currents had pushed the device into Mexico’s Exclusive Economic Zone. The recovery process faced delays due to adverse weather and the expiration of the torpedo’s localization system battery.

On September 21, the Mexican Navy completed the handover of the device. Following confirmation of its origin by the U.S. Defense Attaché, the Commander of the Second Naval Zone transferred the torpedo to U.S. Naval Attaché personnel for transport back to the United States. The device was confirmed to be a non-explosive training tool designed for aircraft and ship launches.
