Regional development and aid in Mozambique and Portugal
Overview
In Mozambique, humanitarian and economic initiatives are addressing displacement and food insecurity. The Japanese government has provided $1.8 million to the World Food Programme to assist approximately 94,000 people in Cabo Delgado through food distribution. Simultaneously, the CARE Mozambique Restore project has reached over 200,000 individuals affected by terrorism and flooding. To foster economic autonomy, the Mozambican government and the World Bank are supporting 14,400 business projects for young women via the Acredita Emprega program.
In Portugal, regional development is being driven by the Alentejo 2030 program and European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) resources. Initial investments focused on hospital equipment and SME support for innovation. Subsequent allocations have expanded to include over 652,000 euros for strengthening primary healthcare networks across several Alentejo communities and 400,000 euros to enhance regional innovation systems. Further infrastructure projects include a 1.2 million euro investment in Tomar for water and sanitation modernization, as well as funding to improve public transport signage and digital information in the Alto Tâmega e Barroso region.
