Regional development initiatives in Western Greece

The Western Greece region is implementing various initiatives focused on regional development, innovation, and human resource enhancement through European cooperation.

In late October 2026, an Innovation Workshop was conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and the National Centre for Public Administration. This event utilized design thinking and reverse engineering to address the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP) and Smart Specialisation Strategies, resulting in a prototype Innovation Capability and Skills Self-Assessment Tool.

Simultaneously, other regional programs are targeting employment and public health. The SMART-HUBs project, an Interreg Greece–Italy initiative, is working to improve youth employability—specifically for those not in education, employment, or training—by utilizing digital and green transitions within the tourism and creative industries. Furthermore, the 6th Health Region, supported by the University of Patras, is promoting public health innovation and the reduction of health inequalities through European Joint Actions and Interreg programs.
