Regional social and health developments in Latin America

Overview

In the Dominican Republic, a health brigade organized by the General Directorate of the Elderly (Sedesol) provided medical and dental care, medications, and vitamins to over 200 elderly citizens in the Nueva Suyapa neighborhood.

In Colombia, the Bucaramanga Metropolitan Area continues to report the lowest unemployment rate in the country at 7.3%, with 616,000 people currently employed. However, the region remains in a healthcare crisis, as emergency services in various clinics and hospitals have reached critical saturation levels, necessitating emergency meetings among health authorities.

Additionally, the Colombian national government has formally terminated the peace dialogue process with the Coordinadora Nacional Ejército Bolivariano (CNEB), citing a lack of genuine will for peace and reintegration. This follows resolutions revoking the recognition of 21 representatives of the organization. In the security sector, military forces in Antioquia successfully recovered two minors who had been victims of forced recruitment by the Subestructura 18, a dissident group led by ‘Iván Mordisco’, while an armed combatant surrendered during the operation.
