Regional water polo developments in Balkans
Overview
A new regional women’s water polo league has launched in Zagreb following an agreement between the water polo federations of Serbia and Croatia. The competition involves four clubs from each nation, including Serbian teams Vojvodina, Palilula, Partizan, and Crvena zvezda, alongside Croatian clubs Jadran Split, Mladost, Jug, and Viktorija.
Slađana Drezgić, head coach of the Serbian women’s national team, noted that the league is expected to “improve match quality and benefit both clubs and players.” The tournament structure consists of two separate events held in Croatia and Serbia, with the top four teams progressing to a final four tournament.
In Slovenia, clubs AVK Triglav and Kranj 75 are preparing for the 2026/27 season. AVK Triglav will field two teams to provide high-quality matches for younger players, with Marko Gostić assuming the role of head coach for the primary squad. The season is set to begin with youth competitions followed by cup quarterfinals in late October.
