Regulation of dietitians in Greece

Overview

The Greek Health Minister and the Association of Dietitians-Nutritionists (S.D.D.E.) have initiated legal action against individuals practicing dietetics illegally. Following the passage of Law 5194/2025, which established an official professional body and a mandatory registry for dietitians and nutritionists, the Association filed 11 lawsuits. These legal actions target two cases involving unauthorized physical offices and nine cases involving the illegal practice of dietetics via social media platforms.

Of the 62 complaints submitted through the Association’s reporting platform, 36 have been reviewed. Under current regulations, practitioners must be registered in the official registry, which includes those with degrees from Greek or recognized foreign institutions. Violators found practicing without proper qualifications or registration may face fines of up to 15,000 euros and one year of imprisonment. Association President Vasilis Tsironis emphasized the risks posed by unqualified individuals, particularly when providing advice to patients with serious health conditions.
