Release and expansion of Marine Atlan film La Gradiva
Overview
Marine Atlan’s directorial debut, ‘La Gradiva’, has transitioned from its award winning festival run toward public release. After winning the Grand Prix at the Cannes Critics’ Week (La Semaine de la Critique), the film has been featured at the Rome Film Fest and Alice nella Città.
The film follows a group of French high school students from Montrouge on a class trip to Naples, Pompeii, and Torre del Greco. Utilizing a documentary like style informed by two years of observation and five months of research within a suburban high school, the narrative explores adolescent desire, identity, and social tensions. Atlan serves as director, screenwriter, and cinematographer, employing a non professional cast of seven young actors and incorporating improvisation to capture authentic energy.
Key characters include James, a cynical student, Toni, who has personal ties to the Campania region, and Suzanne, an observant art student. The film also features a Latin teacher, played by Antonia Buresi, who attempts to maintain structure amidst the students' emotional volatility. The narrative contrasts the living nature of Naples with the stillness of Pompeii, blending contemporary realism with classical echoes.
Distributed by 1-2 Special, the film was scheduled for a limited release in Los Angeles on December 18, followed by an expansion to New York on December 25. Ahead of its Italian theatrical release on November 12, 2026, distributed by Fandango, the National Syndicate of Italian Film Critics (SNCCI) has designated ‘La Gradiva’ as the “Film of the Critics.”
