Religious recognition of San Bartolo Longo

Overview

The Holy See has officially approved the proposal to name San Bartolo Longo as the patron saint of Pompei. Archbishop Tommaso Caputo announced the decision, which Mayor Giuseppe Tortora described as a ‘historical recognition’ of the city’s religious and social foundations.

Following this recognition, the Diocese of Oria has organized religious festivities in Latiano, the birthplace of San Bartolo Longo. These celebrations, scheduled for October 2026, mark the first festivities since his canonization and coincide with the centenary of his death. The program includes a solemn Eucharistic celebration and a Rosary procession led by Bishop Vincenzo Pisanello.
