Repatriation of Vietnamese war martyrs

Overview

Efforts to repatriate the remains of Vietnamese war martyrs to their families have continued through late 2026.

In early September, a funeral ceremony was held in Nghe An province for Le Dinh Van, a soldier from the 309th Division who died in 1981 while defending the Southwest border. His remains were returned to his family 45 years after his death.

By late September, the repatriation of Vi Ngọc Vinh, a sergeant and tank driver who died on April 30, 1975, was facilitated by Vietnam Railways and the Association for Supporting Vietnamese Martyrs' Families. His remains were transported from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Tho province. This follows a broader 2026 campaign by the railway sector, which has provided free travel for 66 relatives and transported 33 sets of remains.
