Republika Srpska wildfire management
Overview
Following a season of significant open-space fires in 2026, the Republika Srpska Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management called for investigations into the causes of the incidents. The Ministry requested authorities to determine if the damage to forest ecosystems and natural resources resulted from criminal acts or negligence regarding forest protection obligations.
In response to these challenges, the Government of Republika Srpska approved the second phase of a regional Open Space Fire Management Program. Scheduled for 2027 through 2029 and funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the initiative involves Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Albania. The program focuses on improving fire prevention, strengthening service capacities, and enhancing the protection of human lives and natural resources.
