Residential fires in Germany

Overview

In early September 2026, two separate residential fires occurred in Germany.

On September 4, a fire in a multi-family residential building in Krefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, resulted in the death of a woman who sustained life-threatening burns. While firefighters contained the blaze to a limited area, criminal investigators have opened an inquiry into the cause.

On September 6, a fire broke out in a municipal emergency shelter in Kempten. The blaze destroyed one apartment, causing property damage estimated to exceed 50,000 euros. Three individuals suffered from smoke inhalation, and one person sustained serious burns while attempting to fight the fire. Approximately 20 to 30 residents were evacuated from the facility during the incident. Police experts are currently investigating the cause.
