Restoration of Esperanza Macarena religious heritage

The Hermandad de la Macarena and Fundación Cajasol announced a two-year restoration project for the ‘Camaronero’ mantle of María Santísima de la Esperanza, a significant piece of religious embroidery in Seville. Led by designer Sergio Cornejo and the workshop Sucesores de Elena Caro, the project aims to preserve the original design by Juan Manuel Rodríguez Ojeda by focusing on structural and ornamental integrity.

Separate discussions have emerged regarding the restoration of the Esperanza Macarena religious image itself. Following an intervention by Pedro Manzano supported by the IAPH, the sculpture has been restored to a state described as its “best version to date.” This has sparked debate, with proponents asserting that professional and scientific criteria were used to ensure integrity, countering claims that the image’s appearance was altered.

In addition to the ‘Camaronero’ project, the Hermandad de la Macarena has reintroduced the historical ‘manto de los Ángeles’ (Mantle of the Angels) for the vestments of María Santísima de la Esperanza. Created between 1936 and 1942, the mantle holds significant artistic value and had been largely out of use for decades following the Brotherhood’s move to its current Basilica in 1949. The piece features front embroidery depicting two angels, inspired by a design by Juan Manuel Rodríguez Ojeda, and incorporates elements from various bullfighter dresses. Following a 2024 restoration by José Antonio Grande de León, which repaired the velvet on the reverse side, the mantle has been returned to active use.
