Restoration of historical monuments in Romania
Overview
Efforts to preserve and rehabilitate historical properties in Romania have progressed through both private sales and state-led initiatives.
In Brașov County, the 470-year-old Guthman Valenta Castle in Hoghiz is slated for restoration following its sale for 155,000 euros. The project has received approval from the Zonal Commission of Historical Monuments, provided the owner conducts archaeological research and maintains specific Renaissance and Baroque elements. Additionally, a renovated house in Bazna, Sibiu County, was recently sold for 73,000 euros.
On a broader scale, several sites have entered stages of rehabilitation and emergency repair. In Sfântu Gheorghe, work has commenced on the Mihai Viteazul Statuary Group, with a goal to complete repairs by December 1. Meanwhile, in Mamaia, the National Heritage Institute has initiated a bidding procedure for approximately 4.33 million lei in emergency repairs to the former Royal Villa, known as Club Castel. These works are part of the national ‘Cultural Foundations’ program, funded by the Council of Europe Development Bank.
