Retail sector POS technology modernization

Overview

Physical retailers are increasingly adopting point-of-sale (POS) modernization to compete with digital commerce. Research from Coresight Research and Aptos indicates that 78 percent of retail executives have moved toward cloud-native environments to improve real-time inventory visibility and support omnichannel capabilities like in-store returns and buy online, pick up in-store services.

Subsequent data from a survey of 150 global retail decision-makers shows that 85 percent of retailers who modernized their POS systems found the investment met or exceeded their return on investment expectations. These cloud-native platforms have contributed to an average 1.2 percentage point increase in in-store conversion rates and a 4.3 percent increase in average transaction value. Despite these gains, a portion of the industry has not fully transitioned, with 22 percent still utilizing hybrid or on-premises environments.
