REWE acquisition of Feneberg supermarkets

Overview

In early July 2026, the Allgäu retailer Feneberg entered self-administration, prompting REWE Group and the investor consortium LEH-Allgäu GmbH to propose a takeover of most of its 72 stores. The plan, announced on 7 July, was described by REWE chairman Peter Maly as giving “people on the ground, employees and the whole region a reliable perspective.” It aimed to preserve roughly 3,000 jobs, keep the Feneberg and VonHier brands, and maintain the regional “Von hier” programme for local producers.

On 10 July, the creditors’ committee approved the deal, confirming a split of approximately 30 to 35 stores to REWE and about 35 to 37 to LEH-Allgäu. The acquisition outbid a competing offer from Edeka and required clearance from the German competition authority. Feneberg’s insolvency was driven by heavy pension liabilities of approximately €70 million and costs related to store expansion and its meat-processing division.

By August 2026, the transition to REWE as the wholesale supplier began. This shift necessitated temporary closures of several locations, including branches in Kempten, Bad Wörishofen, and Mindelheim, to facilitate updates to cash-register and ordering systems. During this restructuring, Edeka’s “Gut & Günstig” range is being replaced by REWE’s “Ja” brand, and the Payback loyalty programme is being discontinued. Five locations are expected to close permanently during the process. The Federal Cartel Office continues to review the market impact of the transfer.
