REWE acquisition of Feneberg supermarkets

In early July 2026, the insolvent Allgäu retailer Feneberg entered self‑administration, prompting REWE Group and the investor consortium LEH‑Allgäu GmbH to present a takeover plan for a large portion of its 72 stores. The initial proposal emphasized preserving jobs, local supply chains and the Feneberg and VonHier brands, while awaiting creditor and competition‑authority approval.

A few days later, the creditors' committee approved the deal, confirming the split of the stores—approximately 35 to REWE and 37 to LEH Allgäu. The acquisition also secured the “Von hier” program for regional producers. Final clearance from the German competition authority and a formal sign‑off by the creditors’ assembly remained pending.

On 1 August 2026, REWE began replacing Edeka as Feneberg’s supply partner for about 30 stores, introducing new cash‑register and ordering systems, ending the Payback loyalty programme and gradually substituting Edeka’s “Gut & Günstig” discount range with REWE’s “Ja” brand. The transition is part of REWE’s broader push to expand its European footprint, targeting foreign sales above €20 billion by the end of 2025 and investing roughly €1 billion annually in logistics, IT and store modernization across Central and Eastern Europe, including growth plans in Romania, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Lithuania and Italy.
