Right-wing extremism normalization in the Netherlands

The research platform Justice for Prosperity (JfP) has called on Dutch politicians to establish norms against right-wing extremism. Founder Jelle Postma argued that failing to challenge extremist ideologies allows them to shift public perceptions of what is considered normal, citing protests in Loosdrecht and riots at the Malieveld as instances where extremists exploit public concerns.

This call follows security reports from the NCTV and AIVD regarding the normalization of extremist views. Prime Minister Rob Jetten has since warned against this trend, specifically noting a strategy described as “façade politics.” This involves presenting radical ideologies through “softer versions” or seemingly acceptable concepts to gain mainstream traction.

Security services highlighted terms such as “remigratie” (remigration) and “omvolking” (demographic replacement) as examples of language that carry more extreme meanings in extremist circles than they may appear to the general public. In response, representatives from the Forum voor Democratie (FVD) and BoerBurgerBeweging (BBB) stated that while they include “remigratie” in their programs, they intend the term to refer only to the voluntary return of individuals who do not feel integrated, rather than forced expulsions.
