Rio Doce Basin dam disaster reparations

Overview

The Rio Doce Basin reparation agreement, established following the 2015 Fundão dam collapse, has expanded through mediation by the Tribunal Regional Federal da 6ª Região (TRF6). Nineteen additional municipalities have joined the pact, bringing the total to 45 out of 49 eligible cities. This expansion includes Mariana, the epicenter of the collapse, which is expected to receive R$ 1.2 billion from Vale and BHP Billiton. The new signatories will gain access to approximately R$ 2.6 billion for public policies and compensation.

While most affected areas are joining the agreement, some municipalities, such as Ouro Preto, remain outside the pact to pursue independent legal action in Brazil and the United Kingdom.

Parallel to the municipal agreements, specific funds have been approved for traditional populations. Under Resolution CRD No. 34 of the New Rio Doce Agreement, approximately R$ 100.9 million has been allocated to support Quilombola families through Family Support Funds (VAF). These funds are distributed across Sapê do Norte, Degredo, and Santa Efigênia following a community consultation process held earlier in the year.
