Rio Doce Basin economic and environmental recovery

Overview

Efforts to support the Rio Doce Basin following the 2015 Fundão dam failure continue through various technical and economic initiatives. The Coopera + Rio Doce project, managed by the Federal University of Viçosa in partnership with the Government of Minas Gerais, is working to select 30 cooperatives and productive groups to receive technical assistance, training, and equipment. This initiative is funded by the Rio Doce Reparation Agreement.

In a parallel recovery phase, Emater-MG has begun conducting diagnostics on approximately 500 rural properties across 36 municipalities. Using Sustainability Indicators in Agroecosystems, technicians are assessing environmental and socioeconomic challenges to develop individual Executive Technical Projects. These projects aim to address issues such as soil and water conservation and the recovery of degraded areas. Local producers have noted ongoing difficulties, including soil damage and market challenges for products like milk due to contamination concerns.
