Cadu de Lula elected Governor of Rio Grande do Norte

Overview

Cadu de Lula (PT) has been elected governor of Rio Grande do Norte in the 2026 second-round elections, defeating Allyson Bezerra (União Brasil). According to data from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Cadu de Lula secured approximately 50.7% of the valid votes, while Bezerra received roughly 49.3%.

This victory allows the Workers' Party (PT) to maintain control of the state following eight years of administration by Fátima Bezerra. Cadu de Lula, a computer engineer, career tax auditor, and former state Secretary of Finance, ran on the ‘Time que Cuida’ coalition with Larissa Rosado (PSB) as his vice-gubernatorial candidate.

The runoff result represents a reversal of the first-round standings, where Allyson Bezerra had led with 36.94% of the votes to Cadu de Lula’s 36.16%. The outcome is viewed as a political triumph for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who actively campaigned for the candidate in the region.

Prior to the final result, polling indicated a highly competitive race. A DataVero/Diário do RN poll showed Cadu de Lula leading with 50.53% to Bezerra’s 49.47%, though the margin was within the 2.53 percentage point margin of error. During the campaign, Bezerra focused on fiscal reorganization and consolidated support in Natal through an alliance with Mayor Paulinho Freire, while Cadu de Lula emphasized economic development and a “DNA próprio” (own DNA) to prioritize private sector engagement.

Cadu de Lula is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 6, 2027, for a four-year term.
