Riverbank erosion and landslides in Vietnam

Riverbank erosion and landslides in Vietnam have caused significant damage to agricultural land, infrastructure, and residential safety across multiple provinces.

In Quang Ngai Province, erosion along a 2.5km stretch of the Dak Snghe River in Kon Braih Commune has impacted over 1,000 hectares of crops, including coffee and cassava. Heavy currents during the rainy season have hollowed out banks near village access roads and home foundations, placing 848 people from 163 households in high-risk areas. Residents have requested government intervention through embankments or relocation plans.

In An Giang Province, erosion along the Hau River led to a 50-meter landslide in My Hoa Hung commune, forcing the emergency relocation of households. Military and police forces assisted in moving property, while authorities worked to reduce bank weight by removing vegetation. Property damage is estimated at 250 million VND.

In Quang Tri Province, erosion along an 11km stretch of the Nhat Le River in Quang Ninh Commune affects over 4,800 households, encroaching within 50 meters of homes and graves. Residents cite natural weather and suspected illegal sand mining as contributing factors.

In Thanh Hoa Province, a 1,000-meter crack on Na Lo Hill in Dong Luong Commune threatens provincial road 530B and has led to the evacuation of 34 households. Additionally, in Lam Son commune, a 650-meter stretch of the Chu River has collapsed, creating vertical cliffs 10 to 13 meters high that are within 2.5 meters of homes.

In Son La Province, over 4,600 households face landslide risks. In Muoi Noi commune, officials noted that current relocation support of 30 million VND per household is inadequate for rebuilding costs.
