Riviera de São Lourenço environmental settlement

Overview

Companies responsible for the Riviera de São Lourenço project in Bertioga, São Paulo, have reached a R$ 40 million settlement to address environmental damages and irregularities, such as the illegal removal of restinga vegetation. The agreement follows a decade-long judicial dispute that began in 2016.

The settlement, which requires no public funds, includes the acquisition of a 48-hectare property at Praia de Guaratuba for R$ 26 million to be donated to the State of São Paulo for the Restinga de Bertioga State Park. Other provisions include an R$ 8 million engineering project to regularize the Bertioga channel and R$ 6 million for a new Brazilian Navy administrative building.

The Brazilian Federal Court has ratified the agreement, which was reached through mediation involving the Federal Public Ministry, the State of São Paulo, the municipality of Bertioga, and other regulatory entities. Future marina construction in the area remains strictly contingent upon obtaining all necessary environmental licenses and regulatory authorizations.
