RML Hospital Super Speciality Block development

Overview

The development of the new 666-bed Super Speciality Block (SSB) at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital in New Delhi has progressed through legal and safety milestones.

In September 2026, the Delhi High Court ordered authorities to expedite the opening of the facility following a petition by the civil rights group Social Jurist. The court directed the recruitment of personnel for 217 approved posts and instructed the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to accelerate construction on lift shafts, lobbies, and fire safety infrastructure.

By October 2026, the 11-storey facility, built at a cost of ₹482 crore, secured fire safety clearance. This clearance removes a significant barrier to commissioning the block, which is designed to provide advanced services such as oncology, liver transplantation, and nuclear medicine. Once fully operational, the new block is expected to increase the hospital’s total bed capacity from 1,538 to 2,204.
